Stressed About Being Stressed about…Wait What?
Sometimes dealing with real life can be a serious pain in the…you know. Trying to make healthy choices can be difficult especially when you have a delicious cupcake in front of you (hint: just eat the darn cupcake one won’t kill you)! There is no magical unicorn that can make you healthy and there is no magical rainbow to the land of no stress. If there was I would be following rainbow road to Happy Funland (wait….rainbow road on mariokart is hard!!). Anyway, the point is there is no quick way to get what you want. Being fit and healthy is hard….worth it but hard. Dealing with stress is incredibly difficult…especially if you live on the planet Earth. This does not mean that you should give up, you just need to change how you do things.
Stress and health go hand in hand. If you have tons of stress it will eventually start to affect your health. It is easy to trap yourself into a corner and allow the pressure of life to crush you. What you need to remember is that YOU can have the power to change this. Don’t get me wrong not all stress can be avoided, but some of it really can be. There are a few things you can do to help manage your stress:
Learn to say “no”: This one is easier said than done. It is easy to feel guilty and say yes to doing something you really don’t want to do. But if you keep saying yes to everything you will eventually wear yourself out. You need to sit down and realistically think about your limits. If volunteering to make those cupcakes for work will to be running late for the rest of the day is it worth it? Yes you would be doing something nice but then the rest of the day you will be running late and stressed…say no, I am sorry but I can’t. The world is not going to end because you said no to doing one more task in your day. You know your limitations…don’t over do it.
Control your surroundings: This might seem like a weird tip but it makes sense. An example of this is my local mall. I HATE going there because I used to work in a videogame store where people could trade in their games. Anyway the place reminds me of a tiny store with really angry people who don’t understand that their scratched and broken game disc was not going to get them $60 of store credit. No exaggeration I once had a person threaten to shoot me and the mall up for not accepting his broken Playstation. Insane! Some people need to just relax! But I am getting off track, the point is Mall bad, run away. I avoid going there unless absolutely necessary. It is full of people who are running around not paying attention AND just by having your car there it could get damaged. Not worth the stress. So I avoid it and life is good…as for my videogame needs I go to their other store down the street, way bigger, and has less people on top of you.
Analyze your To Do list: You don’t need to have a literal list, you just need to think about what things you need to get done in your day. Decide if you “must” do them, “should” do them, or “not necessary” and chop down your list. Anything not really necessary just put them off or move them to tomorrow’s list. You don’t need to do a million different things in one day, just focus on the ones that matter.
When you feel like you are becoming overwhelmed just step back and sort through everything. You deserve to take a little time for yourself! Again, not all stress can magically go away but there will be some situations where you will be able to take control. And just remember stress is temporary, you are stronger than you give yourself credit for. Things may seem tough right now, but they will get better.
