2014 New Year. New Things to Stress Over. Find Your Zen.
Congrats on making it through 2013 and beginning 2014 without a hitch! You are awesome. Now if you are like many Americans you have participated on the whole “New Years Resolution” bandwagon and made some vow to do X before Y of this year. That is great but it can also add some extra stress into your life. For some people if they do not succeed at their goal they beat themselves up and just feel horrible. Other people made these resolutions knowing that they were not going to realistically succeed. And of course there are others that succeed and good for them! So what does any of this have to do with stress?
Well, this can be a new added stress that you are imposing on yourself. The amount of stress you put on yourself can either make you or break you. Stress can have very real side effects such as weight gain, hair loss, digestive problems, and a whole slew of other issues such as depression. So the best advice that can be given is to take a step back, take a deep breath, and relax. You made a new resolution? Ask yourself: is it attainable in the time I have set? Can I realistically squeeze this into my day? Will this help me to be happy? If the answer is yes then go for it! If the answer to these questions are no then you need to reevaluate your goals and adjust them. No need to stress out over something that you just decided to do.
But if you do decide to take on the world, make sure that you take some time for yourself. It is very easy to fall into a routine where you barely have a moment to breathe. No matter how busy you are you need to make sure that you take time to “find your zen”. It doesn’t mean you have to sit cross-legged in a corner and hum (though meditation can be very helpful!), but it does mean you need to find the one thing that helps you relax. For some people it might be getting up early and having that cup of coffee by yourself in the morning. For others it might actually end up being that new spin class that they signed up for. For me, my zen can be found when I bake something new or when I go for a nice jog. The world just stops and for those moments I have peace. It is important that you do the same. Find a little block of time where you can do that one thing that makes you happy and you will notice the difference. Things will get better as long as you realize that it is okay to take time out for yourself.
