The Magic of CHIA

http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-image-chia-seeds-word-background-image24300556What comes to mind when you hear the word chia? Images of terracotta pots in the shape of  Scooby Doo or Hello Kitty with green stuff coming out of it right? Well yes, that is chia but there is more that little seed than meets the eye. Chia seed is right there next to flax seeds are far as being a “super seed”. This little seed is full of antioxidants, omega-3, fiber, it contains calcium, and best of all it helps to curb your appetite. To put it in to perspective  ounce per ounce these little seeds have more omega 3 fatty acids than salmon. Which is great if you are not a fan of fish.

So how do they curb your appetite? And how do you eat them? Well, these seeds expand when you they are in water so they make you feel fuller faster. There are a several ways that you can eat these, my personal favorite is in my oatmeal. You don’t need to have a lot of the seeds a tablespoon is fine. Do not just eat a spoonful, these expand and you will choke! But be creative and add them to things like yogurt, pudding, or juice. I have even added them to corn muffins and they were delicious.  Some people prefer to turn it into a gel (putting 3 tbsp in a favorite just and letting it absorb the liquid) and eat it that way. These little seeds are really easy to incorporate into your diet. Just sprinkle them and go. Not only will you be helping your waistline by eating these, but you will also be getting those added health benefits without having to change your diet. Give them a try.
