Fitness and Dr Who
For those of you who may not know today is the 50th anniversary of a wonderful show called Dr. Who. This wonderful group on Facebook created a virtual 5K where the proceeds went to the Boston Marathon Victims and gave these awesome medals to everyone that participated. (For any Whovians interested they will be having more of these) When I saw this event I jumped on it ! The money went to a good cause, I got the chance to do another 5k without having to drive somewhere to participate, and well I got a shiny new medal! It was great to combine things I love and have it make a difference in someones life.
For those of you who have not ventured into jogging/running, or “wogging” (walking and jogging) as my friend Marie calls it, a virtual 5k is the best way to get your feet wet. A 5k is 3.1 miles, not 5 miles like some people think. They are great for beginners, I did my first one earlier this year and it was amazing. But if you are a bit shy about running in front of people try a virtual fun run. You can find some virtual runs online and some of them go to great causes, like diabetes, St. Lukes children’s hospital, and local programs. For a virtual 5k you pick your own location and just run, jog, wog, or walk the 3.1 miles. If you don’t have a track you can use apps such as map my run to tell you how far you have gone etc. And by the way map my run is a wonderful app if you don’t have it yet. That’s all there really is to doing a virtual 5k. You just sign up and do your 5k by the date it is “due”. You are not obligated to submit your time for the most part, and you get the satisfaction of knowing you did a 5k.
I will warn you once you get a taste of it you will want to do more of them and beat your own time. Again a virtual 5k is perfect to get your feet wet. One that promotes a cause that you believe in is even better. Eventually if you get the courage to do a 5k start off with a “fun run”. Fun runs are exactly how they sound, they are just for fun. The way you start out doesn’t make you any better or worse than anybody else, all that matters is that you start!
No matter how slow you go you are still lapping everyone on the couch!!! 🙂
